Evaporative Coolers
The affordable cooling alternative
Evaporative coolers (also known as swamp coolers) have been cooling homes in Tucson since before air conditioning was invented. They’re simple to operate and cheaper to run than an air conditioner or heat pump.
When it’s hot and dry, a swamp cooler is hard to beat. But when the monsoon season hits, they become much less efficient and are no match for air conditioning.
Family Air can set you up with a new swamp cooler or provide maintenance and repairs on your existing cooler.
What is an Evaporative Cooler?
An evaporative cooler, also known as a swamp cooler, draws in hot, dry air from outside and passes it over one or more wet pads. The air is cooled by evaporating the water, which naturally removes the heat. The cool air is then circulated throughout your home using a fan.
Swamp coolers are often mounted on the roof of the home to make it easier to duct the cool air throughout the house. You could also opt for a window-mounted unit to cool one room or a compact house or apartment.

Benefits of Evaporative Cooling over A/C
- Cheaper to install and run
- Great cooling during hot, dry months
- All natural – no chemical refrigerants are needed
- Pumps fresh air into the house constantly
- Can increase comfort by adding moisture to the air
Drawbacks to Swamp Cooling over A/C
- Loses cooling power in Tucson’s monsoon season (June 15 – September)
- Adds moisture to the air even during monsoon season when the air is already humid
- Requires a constant supply of water, increasing water bills and using up a limited resource in the desert
- Requires more maintenance to keep running efficiently and prevent leaks and potential mold growth
How do I decide what kind of cooler to get?
Both air conditioning and evaporative coolers need to be sized properly for your home or other structures. Placement of your utilities and current ductwork may also come into play. In short, it’s a good idea to call in the cooling professionals.
